Weeki Wachee with Kids: The Nature Coast's Best Family Weekend
Mermaids, manatees, and a spring-fed river your kids will never forget — here's how to do Weeki Wachee right with a family in tow.
Florida's Best-Kept Family Secret
Before Disney. Before SeaWorld. There was Weeki Wachee Springs, where underwater performers have been wowing audiences since 1947. Today it's a state park — and paired with the Weeki Wachee River and the nearby Gulf, it's one of the best family weekends Florida has to offer.
Day 1: The Springs
Weeki Wachee Springs State Park
Hours: 9am–5pm daily Admission: ~$13 adults, ~$8 kids (3–12)
Start at the mermaid show. Performances run throughout the day in an underwater theater built into the natural spring. The 72°F water makes the glass-window viewing surprisingly clear. Kids under 8 tend to be transfixed; teenagers pretend they're not impressed, then admit it later.
After the show, head to Buccaneer Bay — the on-site waterpark fed directly by the spring. The lazy river and water slides sit right on the spring's edge. The water is cold (in a good way) even in summer.
Pro tip: Arrive early on weekends. The park has a vehicle capacity cap and fills up by late morning in peak season.
Day 2: The River
Kayaking or Tubing the Weeki Wachee River
The 7.5-mile paddle from Rogers Park to Bayport is the crown jewel. The water is so clear you can see every blade of grass on the bottom. Families with younger kids often opt for the shorter 4-mile segment.
Rental spots:
- Paddle Weeki Wachee — kayaks, canoes, tubes; shuttle included
- Buccaneer Bay Outpost — adjacent to the state park, convenient if you're already there
Watch for river otters, softshell turtles, and the occasional manatee working upstream from the Gulf. Spring is best for manatee sightings; they congregate in warm spring water during cooler months.
Afternoon: Hernando Beach Dock Time
After a morning on the river, a canal-home rental with a dock is perfect. Kids can fish off the dock (pinfish and mangrove snapper are easy catches), kayak the canals, or just jump off the dock repeatedly until dinner.
Logistics
Best age range: 4 and up for the river; all ages for the springs Sunscreen: Apply generously. The spring water is deceptively cool — you don't feel the burn. What to pack: Water shoes (the river bottom has a few rocky patches), snacks, sunscreen, a waterproof bag for phones
Where to Stay
A canal-front home in Hernando Beach puts you minutes from both the state park and the river. Look for homes with a dock and kayak included — it saves rental fees and means your family can hit the water on your own schedule.
